Selected praise for 13 Ways
“...13 Ways are right up there with the best of local talent. You'd be a fool to miss them!"
Lauren Holden, Lancaster and Morecambe Visitor, Oct. 2005
“...13 Ways - a local band of virtuosos...Already enjoying cult success on University campus, these singer-song-writers nouvelle are taking their mellow vibe to a wider audience..."
Howard Byrom, Lancaster Guardian, March 2005

The story so far… (reviews like that don’t come overnight)

Steve Daffern and Nik Lehto meet up in their university corridor and find out they share similar interests in real life, leisure and music (Manics, old Stereophonics, Supergrass, Ash, Muse etc.= GOOD; Busted, Justin T, Christina A, etc. =BAD). Nik knows his way around a guitar, Steve really knows how to sing, all that is needed is a back line and we’re cooking on gas…

MA in Musicology graduate John Millican (keyboards, rhythm guitar, vocals), Chris “Duracell Bunny” Barnard (drums) and Martin Jones (bass guitar) are found wandering the streets aimlessly and are promptly recruited. Turns out John and Martin also have song writing experience, so we huddle together in a room and throw away the key. Lots of cups of coffee, pints, guitar strings and few weeks of practice later we’ve got a 30min set – padded out with a couple of covers – ready to play our first ever gig in January 2003; 13 Ways has formed. Since then the band has moved from strength to strength. Martin moved on in October 2004 and Adam Neather’s 5-string bass style was found to be a welcome replacement. In the last year, everyone in the band has committed to 13 Ways from a personal and a financial point of view (a significant portion of the band equipment is owned by the band as a whole).

The high song writing output of the band is not reflected in the quantity of our recorded material, we regularly fill 90min gig slots with ease. Also, the high standards that we hold ourselves to means we are constantly revisiting and improving old material. In the last two years, the sound of the band has evolved to something unique: imagine the hard rock edge of Deep Purple meeting Dandy Warhols’ choruses in a vat of boiling Robbie Williams! The objective of our music has always been to deliver a raw personal message in a strong melody, brought forward by outstanding vocal harmony in the context of a powerful rock rhythm section, all neatly wrapped up within today’s listener’s attention span.
New recordings are quickly snapped up by the legions of slavering fans who seem to be there every time we play. In fact, we’ve had to start selling CDs because we kept exceeding our monthly bandwidth limit on the website. This turned out extremely helpful because demo CD sales alone have almost paid off the PA that the band recently spent muchos dineros on… damn 0% interest rates and the fine print.
