EMI urged to drop Beenie Man

Gay rights campaigners in Britain have called on record giants EMI to ditch reggae star Beenie Man over his allegedly homophobic lyrics.

Police in the UK today revealed they may prosecute the singer after complaints his songs incite violence against homosexuals.

Now the Outrage! Group has written to EMI CEO Toby Wadsworth - the parent company of Beenie Man's Virgin label - asking him to cancel the Jamaican star's contract.

EMI have refused to comment on the issue - but London's Metropolitan Police Chief Superintendent Clive Driscoll said of a possible criminal charge against Beenie Man: "It's a difficult investigation. I have no wish to stop someone's freedom of speech. But by the same token, I would not want offences to be missed.

"We will be looking at whether there are grounds for prosecution and if the answer is yes, then who will be liable to prosecution. That's where the complications will come in."
